U.S. Quantum Computerists Headed for Bread Lines

(or to Canada or Australia). DARPA, which in past years was one of the largest funders of quantum computing research in the U.S., has drastically reduced its QC funding for the foreseeable future. In Jan 2004, DARPA held a very promising FoQus workshop to kick start a new QC solicitation. But so far, FoQus has come to naught. The current web site for the DARPA quantum information program (QUIST), looks, quite frankly, moribund. A DARPA director has expressed on the record his (unfair and naive, in my opinion) skepticism about quantum computing. Even worse, recently DARPA has been pouring its money into Haliburton-like companies instead of university research.
